There is a brief moment at the lake when the sky turns impossibly pink, and the poppies catch the last light as if they’re lit from within. This painting lives in that moment.

I was drawn to the original scene for its intensity. The color felt almost exaggerated, yet completely true. As I’ve returned to acrylic and oil with fresh focus, I’ve found myself seeking out subjects that demand precision in color and light. Flowers at sunset offer no shortcuts. They ask you to commit.

This piece began with a radiant underpainting layered in saturated warmth. I then covered the surface in deep, moody darks, carving back through them to reveal the light beneath. The process felt almost archaeological, uncovering glow from shadow. The clouds and poppies emerge as if illuminated from inside, suspended in that final breath before the sun slips behind the mountains.

I finished the work with neon oil sticks, pushing the color slightly beyond reality. The result is a scene that feels both familiar and heightened. It carries the energy of day turning to night, of walking back toward camp, knowing a fire and good conversation await.

This original painting holds that threshold. A pause between brightness and dusk. A reminder to linger just a little longer.
